Amazing Asmika qualified for the World Youth Championship
Young girl Asmika Herath from Kuliyapitiya Central College ran to the ground despite falling down from the final hurdle to qualified for the IAAF World Youth Championship clocking world class 6 minutes 59.56 seconds in the 2000m Steeple Chase at the Junior National Athletics Championship 2017 that began at Diyagama today(23rd) .
Qualifying standards were 7 minutes 10 seconds for the World youth showpiece to be held in Kenya in July and Asmika trained by Coach Janitha Jayasingha ran 10 seconds less than that to book her flight to Nairobi.
In the other events of the day long jumper Nipun Kaldera and Vaulting queen from Jaffna, Anitha Jaganethwaran excelled with new records.
Nipun from Loyola College Kochchikade leaped 7.52m, a new meet record as well new Junior National record, to win the boys under-20 long jump title beating Irusha Malinda of Richmond College who leaped 7.13m. Anitha who set a new Sri Lanka record early this month cleared 3.40m in the pole vault to set a new Sri Lanka record in the girls under-23 category, while one of the former Sri Lanka record holders of the event Pramodha Dilrukshi finished second with 3.30m.
