Six youngsters for Commonwealth Youth Games Athletics
|Athletics Association of Sri Lanka (AASL) had selected team of six athletes for the forthcoming commonwealth Youth Games to be held in Bahamas from 19 to 23 July.
Team includes three athletes trained by Amila Prasanna where St .Benedict’s’ 400m runner Ravishka Indrajith , Lyceum sprinter Sachini Divyanjali and St. Joseph’s hurdler Shehan Kariyawasm in the team . The rest of the team includes 400m hurdler from Mahinda College Galle Navod Sanklpa, 400m runner from St. Joseph’s BV Keglle Sadumini Chaviprabhavi Bandara and Maris Stella long jumper Pramoda Madubashana.
SL athlete won two silver medals in the last edition of the commonwealth Youth Games and still they have given only quota of six athletes for the games by NOC. Because of that proven sprinters with international medals such as St. Benedict’s, Shalika Santhush had been missed out from the team.
Nevertheless according to the chairman of selection committee and AASL recorder Saman Kumara Gunawardan only one athlete (Navod Sankalpa) achieved the qualification time for CYG given by AASL hence they selected athlete who’s performances at Junior Nationals were most closest for qualifying standards. ”
There are two other international meets for youth athlete in World Youth and Asian youth championships this year.
