Ministry takes initiative to regularize supplements in SL
|The Sports Ministry has finally taken the initiative to address a much needed situation in Nationals Sports: Regularizing supplements and drugs usage, confirmed the Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara on Tuesday.
As the Minister described he had a meeting yesterday with all related parties such as Sri Lanka Anti Doping Agency (SLADA), Health Ministry, Sports Medical Institute, National Dangerous Drugs Control Board, and Customs.
“Usage of dangerous and banned substances by athletes is not only at national but also at school level and had been a long running problem in the country. We have been looking for a way to control this for some time now “said the Minister, who further said that the Ministry is going to regularize supplement selling in the country by issuing a license after inspecting the points of sale and the suppliers.
He further said that the Ministry had directed the respective organizations in charge to identify banned substances and supplements which can be used by athletes where the athlete will be able to use these supplements without hesitation.
National Athletes too were suffering due to the attitude of SLADA and Medical Unit who are against the use of any given supplement even though all most all the countries allow their athletes to use supplements to support training programs of the athletes while ensuring their athletes won’t be using any banned substances.
