Athletic selection trials to go as planned
|Trials to select athletes for the forthcoming Asian Athletics Championship will go ahead as planned on 1 and 2 June at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium Diyagama despite the extreme weather conditions in the country.
As Ceylon Athletics reported yesterday, although several top National athletes have been affected by the floods and will be not be able participate at the trials, the AASL has no option but to hold the trials as scheduled.
According to AASL there is a little over a month left for the Asian Championship to be held from 6 to 9 July in Bhubaneswar, India, and they have to select a team and send the names to the Asian Athletics Association in time. The Sri Lankan team is expected to travel to Thailand for the Thai Open Championship scheduled from 12-15 June.
The two day trial will finalize the team for the Asian Championship. The AASL expects to send a team of 15-20 athletes for the championship. Sri Lanka secured just one medal at the last Asian Championship where Nimali Liyanarachchi secured a bronze medal in the 800m.
