84 youngsters selected to represent Sri Lanka at South Asian Junior C’ship

A team of 84 athletes have been selected for the forthcoming South Asian Junior Athletic Championship (SAJAC) to be held at the Sugathadasa Stadium Colombo during 5 and 6 May.

Team includes 44 boys and 40 girls from the junior national athletic championships held from 23 to 27 at the same venue. Sri Lanka will field three athletes for each event during the two day meet which will held from 2.00p.m. to 5.30p.m. on both days.

This will be the first international athletic championship in Sri Lanka since Sri Lanka hosted the Asian Grand Prix back in 2013.

Sri Lanka will be eyeing many gold medals during the championship as recent performance of Junior athletes were very impressive and were very much better than their main rivals’, India’s performance.

India will send the biggest contingent for the championship apart from hosts Sri Lanka where they have selected 59 athletes (31 boys, 28 girls) for the championship. Apart from hosts Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Maldives, Bhutan and Nepal too will send teams for the event.

SAJAC also will be a good preparation ground for athletes for the forthcoming Asian Junior Athletics Championships in June in Japan and will also provide a chance to qualify for the IAAF World Junior Championships in July.
