|Sri Lanka girls relay team kept their supporters edge of their feat as they ran their heart out to shatter 20-year-old Sri Lanka record set by Damayanthi Darsha and co , yet could not cope up with world-class relay lap of Salwa Eid Nasar as they finished fourth in the finals of 23rd Asian Athletics Championship concluded at Khalifa stadium in Doha , Qatar on Thursday.
The relay team comprises of Dilshi Kumarasinghe, Upamalika Rathnakumari, Nimali Liyanarachchi, and Nadeesha Ramanayaka clocked 03: 35.06 seconds shattering the Sri Lanka record of 3:35.42 seconds set by Damayanthi Darsha, Nimmi de Soysa, B.Chandralatha and S.Edirisinghe in 1999 during Kathmandu South Asian Games.
Nadeesha Ramanayaka, the fastest athlete out of four ran the first lap and it was Dilshi’s second lap which was a standout performer where she probably would have clocked her personal best as she beat India’s most experienced 400m runner and also the bronze medalist of this year’s Asian Championship, Poovamma Raju.Bahrain won the gold medal with Nigerian born Salwa Eid Nasar anchoring them to the gold medal with amazing last leg. India finished second while Japan finished third. In the other events of the day both Long Jumpers, Danushka Sandaruwan and Janaka Prasad Wimalasiri could not perform as expected as they finished 7th and 8th. 1500m runners Hemantha Kumara and Gayanthika Abeyrathne too could not impress. Vidusha Lakhani’s bronze medal was the only medal for Sri Lanka in the 2019 Asian Athletics championship.cs championship.
