Gayanthika in sight of Asian Bronze as Gold medalist Gomathi tested positive for doping
Middle distance runner Gayanthika Abeyrathne is in line for the bronze medal of the Asian Athletics Championship as Gold medalist Marimuthu Gomathi of India has failed the doping test immediately after winning the medal.
Gomathi has been provisionally suspended as she tested positive for anabolic steroids making way for fourth place finisher Gayanthika Abeyrathne to get the bronze medal with Gomathi now stripped of her gold medal.
“She has been provisionally suspended until her ‘B’ sample is tested after which she faces a maximum ban of four years, India will lose the gold if the second sample also returns positive” said an Indian Athletics official to the media.
The athletics integrity unit of the International Association of Athletics Federations’ announced on social media late Tuesday that Gomathi had failed the doping test.
The statement on Twitter said Gomathi had tested positive for norandrosterone, a type of anabolic steroid.
Gomathi, who hails from the southern state of Tamil Nadu surprised observers with her winning time of 2min 2.7secs at the Asian Championships where India won three golds, seven silvers and seven bronze medals.
Gomathi’s improvement within this year was remarkable as the athlete who had a personal best of 2 minutes 04.89 seconds, and that too in 2015, improved immensely this year to clock 02 minutes 02.70 seconds to win Gold in Doha last month.
Gomathi told the Indian media she was “shocked” by the failed test and would seek analysis of the B sample.
Media reports said however that Gomathi may have failed a test at a domestic meeting in March but the national doping watchdog, NADA did not immediately report the result to the Indian Federation.
“We tested all those who were not in the national camp when they came here for the Federation Cup but the results came late,” said chief national coach Bahadur Singh, to media.
Gomathi was set to fly to Spala in Poland for India’s training camp and the Indian Federation was keen on trying Gomathi in the 4x400m relay team but her travelling has been immediately halted following the doping results.
