Doha Corniche all set for World Championship mid-night marathon
|Ministry of Interior .Qatar has announced that Corniche will be closed for traffic on September 26 and 27 for the marathon as part of the 17th IAAF World Athletics Championships, Doha 2019. The ministry said in newspaper advt that the Corniche and some peripheral roads will be closed for 11 hours from 6 pm to next day 5 am on September 26 and 27.
The women’s marathon is scheduled to start at 11:59 pm on September 27.The entire stretch of Corniche from Sheraton roundabout to Corniche Grand Hamad street will be closed for traffic along with some arterial roads. Sri Lanka’s qualified athletes for this year’s world championship, Hiruni Wijeyrathne will be competing in the women’s marathon on 27th.
More road closures will be implemented in the coming days for other road races like 50km walk for both men and women (to start at 11:30 on September 28), 20 km Race Walk for women (to start at 11:30 on September 29) and men (to start at 11:30 on October 4). The men’s marathon, which will also be held at the Corniche, is scheduled to start at 11:59 pm on October 5.
Doha 2019 will see the debut of midnight marathon at the IAAF World Athletics Championships. The event will be one to watch, especially as it takes place along Doha’s iconic corniche and against a backdrop of the beautifully-illuminated skyline.
The IAAF World Athletics Championships will take place from September 27 to October 6, 2019. Over 10 days, 24 different events will be held for male and female athletes.
